A Look Into Our Future
Black History Month has long served as a time to honor those who have given service to others in the past. However, this year I would like to acknowledge those among us who are making history now. As we evolve history changes but usually we wait years maytbe even decades or more to pay homage to our esteemed leaders. With the lost mentality of many of our youth it may be time to place some other faces in front of them along with Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X and Nelson Mandela. Dr. Ben Carson, a pioneer in successful siamese separation, should be included in the mix.
President Obama maybe the most significant black leader of our lifetime, not because of his achievements in office thus far but rather as a symbol of change and inspiration worldwide. Our children now see the possibilities are boundless but one present day example is not enough. Dee Roberts, an unintentional activist, whose unlawful arrest and trial lead to a change in testimony protocol within the American Court systems. She had been falsely accused and jailed for selling drugs. This all due to the testimony of a single witness who was a known drug addict. Her feat may not be as well known as Rosa Parks but she was a small woman who took a big stand so others would not have to suffer her fate.
Even in sports the majority of the younger generation will reject the icons of the past. As Michael Jordan gave way for Lebron James, our heroes relevance will constantly fade even though their accomplishments impressive. We thank the inventor of the wheel and revere the creator of space ships. Everything has its order, place and time with no exception.
So remember those making history right in front of your eyes and challenge yourself to make a little history of your own. Its never too late to be of service to others. We all can make a difference and together we change the course of history. The boycott wouldn't have worked if 20% of the people rode the bus. Unity is the mother of potential greatness. So let us decide to work a little less selfishly and make this world a better place then when we got here. Today, we write tomorrow's history, so let's make it one we can be proud of.
